Avon Descent 2002

Home

On the 4th August 2002 our Avon Descent and Luncheon Special train travelled up through the Avon Valley as a 21 coach train hauled by the two C class diesels C 1702 and C 1703

21 coach Avon Descent train with rarely seen double headed C class diesel electric locomotives rolls towards the Robinson Rd crossing whilst passing through the remains of Midland yard.

Those  528 passengers travelling on our train were treated to the sight of the paddle craft of the World Class Event that is the Avon Descent as the train made its way up to West Toodyay yard where the locomotives were put on the other end of the train for the slower journey back down the valley.

The railway enthusiasts were treated to the rare sight of Double headed C class diesels, something which has rarely happened during their entire working life.

In the beautiful setting of the Avon Valley the two C class diesels are seen here at the west end of West Toodyay Yard whilst running around the train.

On the way back down the valley, stops were made after passing Cobblers Pool , the start point for the powerboats, so that the passengers could view the powerboats as they made their way along the Avon River. With water levels being the lowest for 20 years, the competitors of the race could be seen battling the mighty Avon on their way to the finishing line.

Our train certainly makes a fine mobile grandstand in an area which is generally otherwise inaccessible

Passenger Comments

Hi

A short note to let you all know how much my wife and I appreciated the high standard of service and hospitality during our Avon Valley train ride last Sunday. The courtesy and consideration shown to both of us from the moment of first contact at the time of our telephone reservation, during the trip and at the end of a most enjoyable journey were absolutely 'First Class'. I hope the few 'grabbed frames' (Shown here above) from my very amateur video reach you and are of some interest.

Hi

Just a quick note to let you know how enjoyable the tour was on Sunday, as a passenger in the dining car, I was pleasantly surprised as to the professionalism of your fine outstanding volunteer staff, they are a credit to your organization. The meal was excellent, and the staff were able to answer most questions asked from me. I flew to Perth (from N.S.W.) to do this tour and was not disappointed, next time I am in Perth I will endeavour to arrange it with another of your fine tours, could you please pass on my thanks to all whom made the journey so enjoyable.

Thanking you

Richard Sutton
