Pinjarra to Dwellingup Section

Pinjarra :

The townsite of Pinjarra is located in the south west agricultural region, 87 km south of Perth and 21 km south east of Mandurah. It is located near a ford over the Murray River, and land was reserved for a townsite here in 1831. The first section of railway to the South West was from East Perth to Bunbury and was opened to Pinjarra in May 1883

Pinjarra Station, circa 1908

Currently Pinjarra is the main Depot facility for the mainline operations of the Hotham Valley Tourist railway

Alumina Junction :

Junction for the branchline to Alcoa Alumina Refinery

Meelon :

Was a sawmilling site serviced by the railway

Isandra :

Was a sand pit facility for the WAGR. Much sand was taken from here to provide formation for the railway. It has a crossing loop which was rehabilitated in 1985 to increase operational abilities for the running of two trains to Dwellingup.

Brookdale :

Was a stopping place on the railway

Bergining :

When steam locomotives battled up the grades to Dwellingup they usually stopped at Berginning where they could take on water from two 10 000 gallon tanks which were fed by a weir on Marrinup Brook. An M class Garrett Locomotive common to the Hotham Branch takes water

Marrinup :

Was a sawmilling site serviced by the railway and was also the site of a prisoner of war camp during the Second World War

Marrinup Mill in the 1920's with WAGR line in the foreground

Dwellingup :

Dwellingup is located in a timber and fruitgrowing and sawmilling town in the Darling Range ESE of Pinjarra. Townsite lots were surveyed at this place by Surveyor W.F. Rudall in 1909 after the Lands Department became aware that the site was planned as the terminus of the "Pinjarra-Marrinup Railway".

The Station Staff at Dwellingup pose for posterity in front of their small station in July of 1920. When this photo was taken Dwellingup was just another station on the branch line from Pinjarra to Dwarda. The wagon loads of timber amply illustrate the major source of revenue for this part of the railway

Dwellingup is an Aboriginal name said to mean "place of nearby water". The town was burnt out by a bushfire in 1961 but was rebuilt.

Currently the location of Hotham Valleys second depot facility for the Forest Railway services to Etmilyn Siding and the popular Etmilyn Diner Restaurant Train. Also the popular destination of HVTR's Forest Ranger picnic trains.
